Meet 5 of the Most Exciting Malls in Asia

Malls have a special place in the heart of Filipinos. Our country is home to three of the 10 largest shopping malls in the world. When we find ourselves in other countries for business or summer vacation, their malls are naturally places that we want to visit. It can be eye-opening to see their malls for ourselves and how it differs from ours. Here’s a list of five popular malls in different countries across East and Southeast Asia.

Siam Paragon
Where: Pathum Wan, Bangkok, Thailand

Opened in 2005, Siam Paragon World is the third largest mall in Thailand. It offers a first-class shopping experience beloved by tourists and Thais. Like many malls, it features a wide range of specialty stores and restaurants and a multiplex movie theater but the Paragon also contains the Siam Ocean World aquarium, the Thai Art Gallery, and an opera concert hall.

Zhengjia Plaza
Where: Guangzhou City, China

Zhengjia Plaza or Grandview Mall is a 7-storey shopping complex that attracts up to half a million visitors daily. It is the 21st largest mall in the world and is connected to a five star hotel and an office building. Aside from shopping, you can experience two seasons in quick succession because it has an ice skating rink and the Hawaiian Palm Square features a massive musical spring fountain lined with palm trees.

Grand Indonesia
Where: Jakarta, Indonesia

Located near Selamat Datang Monument, Grand Indonesia Shopping Town is an enormous shopping complex consisting of the Grand Indonesia Shopping Mall, BCA Tower, Kempinski Private Residences, and Hotel Indonesia Kempinski. The shopping mall, lovingly nicknamed GI, was opened to the public in 2007 but its grand opening took place in 2009 after the entire structure was built.

Berjaya Times Square
Where: Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Like GI, Berjaya Times Square isn’t just a mall. It’s a 48-storey twin tower building with a hotel and condominium. The entire development is actually the ninth largest building in the world. The mall takes up 13 floors and contains its own indoor theme park, which is the largest in Asia.

Tokyo Midtown Galleria
Where: Akasaka Minato, Tokyo, Japan

Tokyo Midtown Galleria takes up five shopping floors in the huge mixed-use Tokyo Midtown development. Aside from Japan’s and some of the world’s finest stores, the complex is home to amazing works of art and design within the Suntory Museum of Art, 21_21 Design Sight, Tokyo Midtown Design Hub, and Fujifilm Square.
